I like the answer-first shift: ToolGrad builds valid API workflows with textual “gradients” and only then synthesizes queries, sidestepping the costly, failure-prone search for a solution to an already-written prompt. The reported near-100% pass rate and lower cost are promising, though ToolGrad-500 has just 500 samples, so I’d want to see how the approach scales across larger API pools.

I’d start with the distinction between generating “90% confident” and returning probabilities trained against outcomes; it gets at why decision APIs need more than fluent confidence claims. The proposed shared-state encoding and parallel question branches are a thoughtful way to explain Jev’s design, though the architecture is a black-box reconstruction and the author calls the sparse backbone especially uncertain.

The move I like here is to treat variational, score-based, and flow-based models as different routes to a shared time-dependent velocity field, rather than as separate families of recipes. I’d use it as a conceptual map: it connects the origins in VAEs and energy-based models to score SDEs, flow matching, guidance, and faster sampling, though that breadth makes it more of a foundation than a guide to any one current technique.

Separating scaling laws as tools for choosing models and training recipes from the question of why they hold is the tutorial’s best choice. I’m drawn to the second half’s toy associative-memory model as a way to look for a mechanism behind the curves, though the opening only states that agenda, so I can’t judge whether the explanation carries beyond the toy setup.

I’m not convinced Atari 100k makes the case for real-world viability; the leap from a game benchmark to robotics or healthcare is still unshown here. I like the paper’s diagnosis of what limits sample-efficient MuZero-style learning, especially its end-to-end value prefix to reduce compounding error, and the 109% median human score against DQN’s 96% with 500 times less data makes the result worth inspecting.

The 100-0 result is striking, but the part I like is the training loop: MCTS turns the current network into a stronger policy target, then self-play outcomes train its value estimate, with no human games or rollouts. It’s a clean demonstration of search and learning improving each other; 4.9 million self-play games and 1,600 simulations per move also make the compute demands hard to ignore, and Go is a much tidier setting than open-ended agent work.

I’d start with the hidden-state design: MuZero predicts reward, policy, and value without reconstructing observations or recovering the environment’s true state. I like this focus on what planning needs, and the results are striking: state of the art across 57 Atari games and AlphaZero-level performance in Go, chess, and shogi without game rules. Those benchmarks don’t show whether the approach transfers to open-ended real-world dynamics.

The interesting step beyond a standard positional-encoding survey is carrying ALiBi and RoPE’s sequence-length extrapolation story into 2D Vision Transformers, with a direct empirical comparison to standard ViT methods. The RoPE explanation is especially clear about the mechanism: rotating queries and keys makes relative position affect their dot product; I’d want the experimental setup before putting much weight on the performance comparison.

I like this because the scaling plots put bits per byte on private code and held-out research papers against training compute, with measured runs distinct from the dashed projection. Magic claims a DeepSeek V4 Pro Base match at roughly 50x fewer FLOPs, an interesting efficiency result, though these pretraining evaluations alone don’t establish downstream coding-agent performance.

I’d start with the shift from bits per sample to signal-to-noise on the task objective: a binary reward carries little information, but points the update at success, while next-token loss also spends gradient on incidental tokens. I like this as a way to frame why RL can beat iterative SFT, though the broader SNR and loss-landscape explanation is explicitly speculative and needs tests that distinguish objective alignment from other causes.

“If you can execute a check, you have a reward function” is a strong anchor for this tour of frontier-lab reports, especially the example of Kimi K2 training a critic on rollouts from verifiable-reward prompts. I like that it also traces how GRPO has become a family of modified objectives; the caveat is that collected reports show what labs describe, not which variant performs best.

A single overview can flatten the important details, so I’d treat this as a map rather than a substitute for the deeper sources it links. I like the choice to start with the standard agent, action, and policy setup, then frame the LLM as a stochastic policy; it connects familiar RL machinery to LLM training without making the basics feel like a special case.

If you’re choosing what to work on, I like Fischbach’s framing of problem choice as a skill to practice, not just a matter of taste. The “altitude dance” names the shift between focused work and stepping back to update the plan; I especially like the advice to stay clear on the goal while keeping the route flexible, though the article gives a framework rather than evidence that it improves outcomes.

I like that TailRL turns continuous rewards into a family of binary success events, then optimizes their log-probabilities instead of only the mean. The harmonic mixture of Best-of-k gradients makes the connection to inference-time sampling easy to see, though I’m not sure how sensitive the method is to choosing thresholds uniformly over [0,1].

I like this because it turns a mid-training batch jump from a seeming recipe into a hardware-constrained approximation of an accelerating, clipped power-law schedule. The noisy quadratic model gives that schedule an exact test without Monte Carlo, but the derivation assumes vanilla SGD with a constant learning rate, so its fit to AdamW and other objectives is still open.

I’m not sure one six-hour attack on the lab’s own harness says much about transfer, but the method is worth a look: 89 escapes in 153 attempts became cases the revised harness had to block on replay. I especially like the separation between checking the eval and fixing the decision rule before results arrive; a missing run makes the evidence invalid, not a pass.

I’d start with the metrics table, which separates draft time, verification time, and acceptance length; it makes clear why acceptance rate alone doesn’t establish a speedup. The rejection-sampling walkthrough is the strongest part for me: accepting with min(1, p/q) and resampling from the residual shows how the output keeps the target distribution, while the performance discussion here is a framework for interpreting speed numbers rather than a demonstrated comparison.

I trust this framing because it treats advisor choice as a risk-management problem too: the advice to identify a second possible advisor avoids betting a PhD on one relationship. The four lenses, career, identity, stability, and variability, counterbalance prestige and paper-count optimization; they make the tradeoffs easier to see, though they don’t tell you how to weigh them.
